Harmony in Contrast // Group Exhibition at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art Loretto

From the Altoona Mirror, January 6, 2024
The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art announces two new exhibitions “Harmony in Contrast: Bridging Nature and Industry in Landscape Art” in Loretto and “Visions of Entertainment,” which features music, movie, and television posters in Johnstown.

Opening Jan. 19, the Loretto exhibit explores the dynamic interplay between the serene beauty of nature and the commanding presence of industrial scenes through SAMA’s permanent collection. The exhibition will span both galleries at SAMA Loretto and runs through May 12.

“Harmony in Contrast” invites visitors to witness the convergence of vibrant, colorful landscapes with the formidable and imposing depictions of industrial landscapes. This juxtaposition serves as a focal point, highlighting the unique harmony that can emerge when nature and industry coexist within the artistic realm, officials said in a release. Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Loretto is open Friday through Sunday, noon to 4:30 pm.

'Visions of Entertainment' on display at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center

From the The Tribune-Democrat, written by Kelly Urban, Johnstown, Pa. on May 2, 2024:

From Simon & Garfunkel to "Equus," the exhibition will not only serve as a nostalgic trip down memory lane for seasoned fans, but also provide an educational experience for members of younger generations interested in discovering the visual language of bygone eras.

"This exhibition is a tribute to the artistry and cultural significance of the posters that have played a pivotal role in shaping our perceptions of entertainment," said Hannah Harley, curator of the SAMA Johnstown and Loretto museums.

"We're really celebrating graphic design in this exhibition, and we're looking at it as its own art form. How we communicate things and share information are part of our visual world, so we're really excited to share a few pieces from our incredible Del Costello poster collection." The display includes 30 posters.

As part of the larger North Appalachian Folk Festival festivities, The Fox Clark Gallery hosted its first juried exhibition, bringing 64 pieces that celebrate Appalachian culture from 31 regional artists in one place.

The exhibition, which has been on display since Aug. 22 and will continue through Sept. 21, is the result of all submissions from the gallery’s call for artists in June.
