This is What Democracy Looks Like

The phrase “This is What Democracy Looks Like” became a ubiquitous chant on the streets of New York City in 201 and 2017. This series adopts that mantra as a lens to examine the physical reality of regional governance, moving away from the high-gloss national media narrative and into the offices of local elected officials.

While national politics can feel like a theatre of ideals and lofty expectations, where empty promises thrive and the people can become lost. The local elected officials seemed as heroes to me, giving of their time, effort, and resources to make their communities a better place. Their offices are tactile, mundane, and deeply human. The images serve as a testament to these individuals as they maintained the infrastructure of our daily lives.

The second gallery is miscellaneous political photographs taken during this time.
