In 2015, there were 108 homicides in the city of Pittsburgh. These photographs, taken with a large-format view camera using 4x5 black and white film, bear witness to the spaces left behind. By documenting the locations of these violent acts, the work explores the hidden memory of a landscape and how the site of trauma eventually softens and perhaps fades into a withered, beautiful, and indifferent environment.

In the Appalachian hills of Pennsylvania, the industrial towers known to children as "cloudmakers" seemed like a benign, permanent fixture of the horizon until the realization of their toxic environmental impact shattered that childhood nostalgia. The Cloudmakers utilizes digital manipulation to layer dreamy memories with industrial machinery, replicating the complexity of grieving a landscape while recognizing the industry's role in sustaining the community’s livelihood.

Statecraft (2017) is an exploration of the correlation in contemporary American culture between visual presentation and politics. Using the artist’s face and body as a canvas for the American politician, Harley Bouleau cheekily addresses the rigidness of traditionally acceptable personas and the importance of appearance in politics.

This series investigates the socio-spatial identity of Appalachia, specifically the Pennsylvania hills, through intensive cataloging of the intersections of domestic life, natural formations, and industrial remnants along transit corridors. By documenting roadside landscapes and residential architecture, this series interrogates how the history of the land is etched into the current state of its towns and dwellings. The resulting imagery functions as an archive of the "in-between," as much of the region works to reimagine their identity through shifting economic conditions, population decreases, and property value decline.

Several students from ST: Art & Community Engagement presented their research at SURI. Joining the traditionally science-based research symposium, these students were able to show how research was incorporated into their community-engaged work and how they used their talents to serve the community. Coordinating the Fjelstul lecutre and workshop with Ramiro Davaro-Comas for Fall 2025 meant that students in the FGCU Art Program got to paint two murals in the Arts Complex Courtyard. These were unveiled November 2025. Read more here.

The FGCU Art Galleries partnered with Art and Language and Literature Programs to create a hybrid visual art and creative writing site-specific outdoor public exhibition. Dr. Harley Bouleau supported students in ST: Art & Community Engagement in their collaborations with students from Intro to Nature Writing. Four murals have been installed on the Cohen Student Union building, activating a heavy trafficked area with bright, engaging artworks. Read more here.

In collaboration with the Friends of Rookery Bay, Professor Hannah Harley’s History of Photography students presented Wildlife and Wild Places in SWFL, an exhibition exploring the relationships between art and environmental stewardship. The exhibition showcases student work that integrates classroom theory with regional engagement.

Students in History of Photography (Spring 2025) utilized FGCU’s University Archives and Special Collections, providing them with hands-on access to primary sources and collections. By engaging with physical materials and regional history, students moved beyond digital theory to create original works that bridged archival research with contemporary storytelling and modern scholarship. This initiative was a collaborative partnership at FGCU that addressed social isolation by pairing students with senior citizens to share stories on camera.
