Untitled (Pornography)
This series of collages investigates the construction of race and sexual desire within the pornography industry, specifically through printed magazines. By physically deconstructing and isolating skin tones from adult “international” magazines, the work reveals a startling lack of diversity and a pervasive Eurocentric bias. These magazines, some of which marketed a global spectrum of women, consistently prioritized light skin tones and Western features, which effectively white-washes the representation of the body and prioritizes this visual as desirable. Through the process of collaging, the work strips away the performative nature of the "international" label to expose the underlying racism and standardized beauty ideals inherent in mass-produced print media.
